Dirty Blonde: The Hair Trend Turning Us Away From Ashy Tones

Kate RussellBy Kate Russell on August 22nd, 2018

Ashy-tones and icy hues have been the buzzwords of blonde hair trends for as long as we can remember now. From the drastically cool shades of arctic hair to eternally on-trend pastel colours, it’s all been about coolness. However, recently we’ve seen a slight shift in blonde hair trends and a return of something a little dirtier.

Dirty blonde is the more natural, slightly warmer sister to blonde highlights. Using both highlighting techniques and balayage in a similar way to the ash looks of the last few months, dirty blonde takes it back to basics with less emphasis on brightness and hints of silver and introducing a more beachy and relaxed, 90’s blonde vibe.

Now, we’re not talking yellow blonde or brassy hues here. Oh no, this look is just as chic as any cooler trend you’ve been trying recently. The look just soaks up a little more natural essence, with a deeper variance of colours within each head of hair. From deep browns to softer blonde highlights, the look is all about depth and dimension, created using a range of natural, deeper blonde palettes.

Why are women opting for dirty blonde?

Not only is blonde a super-flattering colour technique for pretty much all skin tones, it’s also a fairly easy look to achieve and manage, giving it those vital low-maintenance hair colour points. Working perfectly with a balayaged look, deeper-coloured roots only enhance the trend, therefore making it less of a priority to keep heading back to the salon for regular top-ups. The lighter shades lift the hair, without drastic bleaching and excess damage.

Having slightly warmer and less ashy tones through blonde hair is also easier to manage day-to-day. Without having to endlessly use purple tone shampoo to keep the colour on point, you can focus more on the health and strength of your hair, ensuring it’s as moisturised and hydrated as it should be.

Dirty blonde is also a great transitional avenue for brunettes looking to move over into the world of the blondes. Without having to lift the hair too drastically, highlights and balayage can be used to bring the brown hair into a darker blonde, without feeling the need to overly bleach the deeper hues. Each time a colour specialist creates a dirty blonde look, it can be created to perfectly suit the natural base on which they begin. Every shade is slightly different with a slightly different technique, resulting in an overall more natural and unique look, created just for you.

Will you be turning away from the ashy vibes of the last year’s hair colour trends? Dirty blonde is growing on social media and we’ve got a feeling it will be the hottest look to ask for in hair salons all over, very shortly. As always, if you’re thinking about taking the plunge to a deeper, warmer version of your blonde, ensure you take several inspiration images with you to show your stylist exactly what you’re looking for.
