What Is Lash Layering & How Does It Work?

By Dean Laming on November 30th, 2023

If you own a salon, you are aware that eyelash extensions are still among the most sought-after services for customers who want to accentuate their natural beauty. Classic single layer sets certainly create a subtle yet polished look, but  today’s clients often want even more glamorous, eye-catching results from their eyelash extensions. This is where the technique of lash layering comes in.

But what exactly is lash layering and how does it work?

The Basics of Lash Layering

With traditional eyelash extension application, synthetic eyelashes are isolated and glued one-by-one to the client’s own natural lashes in a single row along the lash line of the upper eyelid. This creates a fuller, longer lash look while still appearing quite natural.

Lash layering follows a similar process but goes a step further by adding a second row of synthetic eyelash extensions just slightly above the first row. When applied properly, this double layer of lashes appears seamless and mimics the look of extra thick, voluminous lashes with double the impact.

How the Lash Layering Process Works

Perfecting the lash layering technique requires precision, care, and attention to detail, but the results are striking when done correctly by a highly skilled technician. Here is an overview of how the process works:

  1. Carefully isolate and adhere the first row of synthetic eyelashes along the natural lash line using semi-permanent salon-grade lash glue.
  2. Once the first layer is complete, go back and isolate slightly longer natural lashes just above the first row.
  3. Adhere a second row of synthetic lashes to these upper natural lashes so they sit just 1-2 mm above the first row.
  4. Pay close attention to isolation so the second row attachments do not overlap or bump into the first row. Proper spacing is imperative.
  5. Use lighter, finer lashes for the second row to ensure the two rows blend together seamlessly.
  6. Choose lash lengths, curls, and thicknesses that gradually increase from the inner to outer corners of the eyes for a natural look.
  7. Throughout the process, check for any gaps and fill them in to create a full, uniform lash line across both rows.
  8. At the end, seal and set the layered lashes properly so the bond remains intact until the client’s next fill appointment.

The Benefits of Lash Layering

So why would a client choose to get lash layering versus a traditional single layer lash set? Here are some of the key benefits:

Bolder, More Dramatic Look

For clients who want to go above and beyond an everyday natural lash enhancement, layering allows for a much bolder, head-turning aesthetic. The doubled-up lashes create serious drama and flair.

Appearance of Natural Thickness

While clearly amped up compared to a single layer, properly layered lashes can still retain an organic thickness rather than appearing overly unnatural and stuck on. The graduated lengths help achieve a believable look.

Customised Volume

The amount of volume from lash layering can be customised based on the client’s goals. For more subtle drama, only layer the outer half of the eyes, and for all-out glam, do two full rows across the entire lash line.

Longer Lasting Fullness

As natural lashes in the initial row shed, the second layered row helps maintain overall fullness between fills. This extends the longevity of the layered eyelash extension look.

Youthful, Wide-Eyed Effect

Doubling up lashes helps open up and widen the eyes, creating a refreshed, youthful appearance. Layering is ideal for clients wanting to minimise signs of fatigue.

Works Well with Makeup

Layered lashes pair perfectly with makeup, from subtle daytime polish to full evening glam. Thick mascara and liner complement and blend with layered sets seamlessly.

Greater Confidence

For many clients, achieving a striking yet natural eyelash enhancement boosts self-confidence significantly. Fluttery, bold lashes help them feel their best for big events and everyday.
